The Company has been fortunate to retain the core group of VitaGen that kept the company on-track even during its difficult periods. Further, they have already proven their skills, value and know-how, and have made many value-added contributions to the company in its short history. The bios of management are below.

Terry Winters, Ph.D., Chairman and CEO

 

Dr. Winters received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Wales. He is a founding general partner in Columbine Venture Fund. Dr. Winters has specialized in creating medical device and pharmaceutical companies based on university sourced technology. He is currently a Special Limited Partner of Valley Ventures and assists in funding and managing life science investments. He is a board member of Amplimed, Afferon, AzERx and Epitan.

Kameron Maxwell, Ph.D., COO

 

Dr. Maxwell received his Ph.D. in Immunology from University of Utah in Salt Lake City and has been involved with the clinical development of drugs and for over 20 years . He previously held positions at Genta Inc. and Baxter Travenol’s Hyland Division in Costa Mesa, California. Dr. Maxwell was also founder and president of Americal Pharmaceuticals Incorporated. At VTI, he is responsible for all operations, including CMC and clinical development. All employess report to Dr Maxwell.

Jan P. Barker, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Business Development

 

Ms. Barker received a BS, from the University of San Francisco and an MS, from the University California, Davis/Stanford University. Ms. Barker brings wide-ranging experience to the Vital Therapies team. She has a broad combination of complementary skills in the healthcare entrepreneurial environment. Her diverse experience has included management, sales and marketing, research and development, human resources, information technology, development of e-healthcare technology and systems, devices and manufacturing. She is currently a Special Limited Partner with MedVenture Associates, a participant in the funding of Vital Therapies, and has worked/invested with private and public corporations in the healthcare systems, technology and medical device industries, including IPCM, The Hospitalist Company (S-1 Filed), PointShare, Networks for Healthcare, Alere Medical, Incorporated (Aquired), MedPartners, Inc., Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.

Aron Stern, Vice President, CFO, Secretary and Treasurer

 

Mr. Stern received a B.S. degree in Economics and Business Administration and an M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from the University of California – Berkeley. Mr. Stern has over 20 years of experience in capital formation, acquisitions, financial strategy and financial and operational management in growth-stage high technology and biotechnology companies. He previously held positions at Apple Computer and Isis Pharmaceuticals, and for 9 years was CFO at Protein Polymer Technologies Inc., 4-D Neuroimaging, and for 3 years at VitaGen.

Dan Zhang, M.D., Executive Vice President of Vital Therapies Inc. and President of Vital Therapies (Beijing) Co. Ltd.

 

Dr. Zhang received his pre-med training from Beijing University, his M.D. from Peking Union Medical College, an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health, and a master’s degree in healthcare management from Wharton Business School. Dr. Zhang has more than ten years of drug/device development experience, including head of Clinical Development and Global Safety Assessment at Sigma-Tau Research Inc. where he managed the Italian company’s North American clinical development programs, and as a vice president at Quintiles Transnational Corp. and member of its Executive Operating Committee, responsible for the Greater China Area. Before joining Quintiles, Dr. Zhang has provided consulting services to many healthcare companies, including Eli Lilly, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc., Medtronic, Inc. and CIGNA Health Care, which included clinical trial design, health economic studies, pricing and market-entry strategies. Dr. Zhang has established a strong working relationship with government and academic institutions in China, including the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Medical University. He is currently a senior consultant to the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences/Peking Union Medical College, and President of the Chinese Biopharmaceutical Association-USA (CBA).

John Brotherton, Ph.D, Vice-President, Technology and Product Development

 

Dr. Brotherton received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego. His expertise includes the design of hollow fiber bioreactors for support of mammalian cell growth. Dr. Brotherton held positions including as an engineer at the Space Systems Division of General Dynamics, and 7 years at VitaGen in the design, development and testing of the ELAD® System, including the bedside unit.

Dar He, M.D., Vice-President, International Operations

 

Dr He is an M.D. from Shanghai First Medical University, P.R. China, where he did clinical research in liver pathology. His postdoctoral fellowship work at University of California Davis involved cancer therapy, and at Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pathology he studied liver disease and developing clones from human primary hepatocytes. Dr. He joined Hepatix in 1990 and has been involved in research and development of ELAD® for 7 years, and the manufacturing of ELAD® for 6 years through all clinical testing. He is an expert in nurturing and growing the cell line and preparing the ELAD® cartridges.

Shapour Aslani, Ph.D., Director, Quality Control and Quality Assurance

 

Dr. Aslani received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Houston. His prior experience includes quality control and production management positions in companies both in the U.S. and Iran. He held positions with VitaGen for 7 years, responsible for manufacturing QC and maintaining cGMP compliance.

Marty Banas, Associate Director, Process Development

 

Mr. Banas received his degree in Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. As Director of Technical Services at Unisyn, Mr. Banas has been involved with Hepatix/VitaGen for over 13 years and was responsible for the installation and service of their production systems. He joined Vital Therapies in December of 2005 bringing over 20 years of experience in the engineering, service, and GMP production of hollow fiber bioreactor production systems. At VTI, he is responsible for the next generation of large-scale production systems.
